Security: Role Allocation Approach

From within the Administration | Security part of the Timegate Web Web Client, the user can set up different roles for system users and allocate them. This is newly added functionality in Version 18.3. If users are moving from the Desktop Client version of Timegate Web, the way that the Web Client works may cause a little confusion at first, as the two versions work differently. This section of the Timegate Web guide is designed to make the transition from Desktop Client to Web Client trouble free.

Assigning roles using the Desktop Client

Historically, users would follow the process below to assign a role using the Desktop Client:

  1. Assign a Branch to an Employee

  2. Assign a Function Role to said Branch

  3. Go to the Site Roles tab

  4. Assign a Site Role to the employee

When following this process, the employee with have the function role that was originally assigned to the branch and only have access to the sites in the Site Role. If this process was followed by a user in the web client, it would not work as there is no function role against the Site Role.

Assigning roles using the Web Client

The web client works in a smarter way. It calculatesTimegate Web calculates which sites are in the site role and applies the function roles to the sites parenting branches.

Users can follow the process below to assign a role:

  1. Assign a Site Role to an Employee

  2. Assign a Function Role to said Site Role

When the user saves their changes, Timegate Web will automatically rebuild the branch access according to the site and function role. If the user does not allocate a function role to the site role it will have nothing to use when rebuilding the branch access.

Note: The Web Client flow doesn’t work correctly in the Desktop Client, and the Desktop Client flow does not work in the Web Client.
